Quartz glass, made from high-purity silicon dioxide (SiO₂ content ≥99.9%), is a specialty glass that holds a high-end and irreplaceable position in the glass material system due to its unique physical and chemical properties. It is known as the “king of glasses.”
Uniqueness of quartz glass
① Quartz glass is the representative of high-end glass. It is the only glass material that can be used stably for a long time at temperatures above 1000℃ (softening point is about 1700℃), while ordinary soda-lime glass can only withstand temperatures of about 500℃. The purity and performance of quartz glass significantly surpass those of ordinary glasses (such as impurity-containing soda-lime glass), and this makes quartz glass a critical foundational material in cutting-edge fields, such as: optics and semiconductors.
②The preparation of quartz glass requires high-purity quartz sand (impurity content <50ppm), and complex processes (such as gas refining and plasma melting), with high technical barriers.
Application of quartz glass
· Optical field
Optical fiber preform (core material for optical communication, transmission loss <0.2dB/km);
Optical lenses (telescopes, lithography objective lens, achieving nanometer-level resolution);
Laser nuclear fusion target window (resistance to high-energy radiation damage).
· Semiconductors and Electronics
Single-crystal silicon growth crucible (withstands 1420℃, metal contamination-Free);
Etching equipment lining (resists fluoride corrosion);
High frequency insulation device (5G communication substrate).
· Energy field
Solar photovoltaic cell encapsulation (light transmittance >95%, service life up to 25 years);
Photocatalytic reactors (degrading organic pollutants);
Nuclear reactor observation windows (gamma-ray resistant).
· Aerospace field
Missile fairing (wave transmittance >90%, withstands 3000℃ aerodynamic heating);
Spacecraft porthole (resistant to cosmic rays and micrometeoroid impacts).
· Medical field
Medical laser scalpel (delivers high-energy laser beam).
