Differences between α-Quartz and β-Quartz

1. Introduction

Quartz is one of the main rock-forming minerals, it generally refers to low-temperature quartz (α-quartz), which is the most widely distributed mineral in the quartz family. In a broad sense, quartz also includes high-temperature quartz (β-quartz) and coesite.

α-quartz and β-quartz are two different crystal forms of quartz, they are also respectively called low-temperature quartz and high-temperature quartz.

2. Differences between α-quartz and β-quartz

2.1. Crystal structure

α-quartz:

–  Its crystal structure is trigonal.

–  Less symmetry compared to β-quartz.

–  Its crystal structure is hexagonal.

– It has a higher symmetry, which allows for a more uniform arrangement of atoms.

2.2. Stability

α-quartz:

    – It is the stable form of silicon dioxide at room temperature and pressure, and it is the most common form of quartz in nature.

β-quartz:

– It is a deformed crystal of silicon dioxide at high temperature. When temperature is around 573-870℃, it is stable. When temperature is lower than 573℃, it would transform into α-Quartz.

2.3. Density

α-Quartz:

–  Its density is 2.65.    

β-quartz:

–  Its density is 2.32.

2.4. Application field

α-Quartz:

– It has a wide application in electronics, optics and construction. Due to its stable physical properties, α-Quartz is often used to manufacture high-purity quartz products.

β-quartz:

– It is often used in high temperature material and refractory material due to its high temperature stability.‌

3. Summary
